Health inequalities are the unfair and avoidable differences in health outcomes experienced by different groups of people. These disparities are often shaped by factors such as income, education, ethnicity, housing, employment, and where people live. While these issues affect many areas of health, their impact on mental wellbeing is particularly profound.

People living with mental health problems can die up to 20 years earlier than the general population. That is not just a statistic — it is one of the starkest examples of health inequality in modern society.

Inequalities data can show what is happening, but it cannot explain why it is happening or how people experience services differently. Numbers alone cannot capture the barriers people face or the personal realities behind unequal outcomes.

The Inequalities in Mental Health Checklist

helps staff, service users, and carers explore the reasons behind the data. Rather than simply identifying disparities, the tool encourages meaningful conversations about access, experience, and outcomes.
